Perhaps the rarest and most haunting of all of them is the fog bow .

The rare phenomena , named a fog bow , was spotted by Sam Dobson during a recent expedition to the North Pole .

This gives them a pale light which , combined with the fog around them , means most fog bows take on an incredibly ghostly quality .

The difference is that , while rainbows are caused by light refracting through large droplets of water , fog bows are caused by light diffracting through incredibly fine drops .

A fog bow is a similar phenomenon to a rainbow , but it appears as an arch in fog rather than rain . And because of the very small size of water droplets that cause fog , smaller than 0.05 millimetres , it appears as a white arc , rather than a multi-coloured one .
